Rome, 28 Oct. (LaPresse) – “The positive spirit of AIRC has inspired society; it has helped to spread knowledge and foster a culture and widespread public opinion that respect science. Great credit is due to AIRC and, everywhere, to all the researchers, scientists and doctors who work with passion and dedication to achieve new milestones. Reflecting on these achievements – so significant and evident – certain glaring contradictions of our time seem incomprehensible and stand out. Research and science save human lives, in ever-increasing numbers, and yet we must still observe that irrational beliefs and destructive fake news are spreading and persist, trapping even small sections of the population in fear. Prejudicial opposition to vaccines is one of the most disconcerting symptoms: when we are confronted with painful news stories, involving adults or children who risk or even lose lives that could easily have been saved, we feel the need to counter the efforts of those seeking to poison public opinion.” These were the words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, speaking during the ‘Days of Research’ celebrations at the Quirinale.
