Rome, 25 Oct. (LaPresse) – “When we talk about fully implementing our Constitution, we do not simply overlook Article 11; we take it as our starting point, because Italy repudiates war. We repudiate war and want peace for the Palestinians, for the Ukrainians, and for the Iranians who are fighting for freedom against the brutal regime in Tehran. We want to be peacemakers and ensure that international law is upheld everywhere.” This was stated by Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein, speaking in Montepulciano at the ‘Pronti per l’alternativa’ event. “We must insist that international law always applies and applies to everyone. Alongside the support we have rightly never failed to give to the invaded people of Ukraine, we need politics; we need diplomacy. We need a single European negotiator,” she emphasised. “It is inexplicable that they have still not chosen a single voice to represent the 27 Member States and to help secure a ceasefire and negotiations for a just peace – which certainly does not mean surrendering to the aggressor’s demands.” “We should not have left room for the ambiguity of Putin’s phone calls with Trump or the cynical horse-trading over diesel and at the expense of the Ukrainian people. That is where Europe is needed. There must be a European voice standing alongside the Ukrainian people to negotiate a just peace,” concluded the leader of the PD.
