Milan, 25 Oct. (LaPresse) – Matteo Salvini has been re-elected as leader of the Lega for the fourth time, until 2030. At the League’s congress, held at the Allianz MiCo in Milan, the Deputy Prime Minister secured 465 votes, whilst his challenger, Lombardy Senator Massimo Garavaglia, received 146 votes. “This afternoon marks the start of a new journey. I take with me the reflections of recent months,” were Salvini’s first words following his re-election. “We have been loyal for four years; we are a coalition of friends and people with different views. In some cases, we have gone out of our way to reach out to others. And I am thinking of how the League is treated where we hold a majority; I will no longer tolerate the League being treated as a second-class ally in a region where it governs as part of the centre-right. The numbers speak for themselves; we demand respect,” added the League leader.
