Rome, 5 Sept. (LaPresse) – “With Austria’s accession to the European Union in 1995 – the very same year that the Schengen Agreement came into force – a new era dawned, characterised by a shared space, dialogue, the promotion of rights and a shared culture that draws strength from diversity and uses it as a lever for progress.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, during the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement – Autonomy Day 2026 – in Merano. “ “The decision to participate together in the building of the European Union – a community of values – clearly affirms our rejection of the totalitarian ideologies that had sadly marked the history of the twentieth century,” continued the Head of State. “From this perspective, as De Gasperi himself had already hoped, borders – once historical natural or artificial obstacles – have become meeting points between lands and peoples eager to live in harmony and prosper together.”
