(LaPresse) – “I do not see” in Vannacci’s programme, nor “when listening to his speeches, the re-establishment of the Fascist Party, but one aspect of Fascism – the most insidious one – is already at work. I see in him the reconstruction of the narrative, of the rhetoric of the spirit of Fascism: he is, more or less, proclaiming the superiority of Italy, of Italians and, shall we say, of the Italian race”. So said the former Prime Minister and former EU Commissioner, Mario Monti, at the 52nd edition of the Cernobbio Forum organised by the Teha Group, where he took part in a panel with the leader of Futuro Nazionale, Roberto Vannacci, to whom he replied with these words. “I have never considered the Italian people to be inferior a priori, but neither do I consider them necessarily superior to other peoples. This is where the Calimero complex comes in: it insinuates that we are proud of our Italian identity (and I am too) and that we are not respected enough. And so we demand greater respect and say, ‘we’ll show them and make them pay’. I am terrified of a psychological reconstruction of a ‘Little Italy’ and of the fact that, since we are unable, under the current governments, to deliver more growth for our citizens – because we care about their votes rather than their well-being – the population will have to be satisfied by playing on their sense of identity. “I would view this with greater concern” than “that move to reconstitute the Fascist Party” and “if you continue down this path, I will devote my last ounce of energy to preventing it”, concludes Monti.
