Milan, 23 Aug. (LaPresse) – “Yesterday’s letter is the second that Giorgetti has signed alongside other European ministers calling for a tax on the windfall profits of energy companies. Whilst waiting for the proposal to gain the necessary support at EU level, Meloni and Giorgetti should move from words to action, take the initiative and introduce this tax at national level.” This is the proposal put forward by the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, as reported by the ‘Corriere della Sera’. “Fuel prices have now exceeded 2 euros per litre everywhere, and the reduction in diesel excise duty expires in two days’ time. Stopgap measures are no longer enough. We must immediately adopt support measures for the most vulnerable households and businesses and put in place a genuine strategy to structurally reduce energy costs. A tax on energy windfall profits could make a significant contribution to funding these measures,” adds the Democratic Party leader. She is referring to the call made yesterday by six European countries (Italy, Germany, Austria, Poland, Portugal and Spain) to introduce a tax on oil companies’ windfall profits.
