(LaPresse) – “Every 8 August, we honour all this and pay tribute to the great history of Italian emigration: a history shaped by hard work, sacrifice, respect for the rules, integration and dignity. And we do so thanks to the foresight of a patriot like Mirko Tremaglia, who, as Minister for Italians Abroad, proposed and established the ‘National Day of Sacrifice for Italian Workers Worldwide’ 25 years ago. We are proud that the European institutions have decided to designate 8 August as the ‘European Day in Memory of Victims of Accidents at Work and for the Protection of Workers’ Dignity’. This is an Italian initiative, which the European Parliament approved by a large majority and which the Government has embraced and supported wholeheartedly, to reaffirm that work must always be synonymous with dignity, rights and safety, and that in Europe there can be no place for those who exploit people and trample on workers’ rights.” So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. “Today, Italy commemorates the 262 victims of the Marcinelle tragedy. 136 were Italians who had emigrated to Belgium in search of a better future and who, sadly, met their deaths in the darkness of a mine. Marcinelle is an event that forms part of our collective memory. But it is also a symbol of the extraordinary contribution that tens of millions of Italians have made to the prosperity of entire nations and continents, whilst always maintaining a deep bond with their homeland,” added the Prime Minister.
