Rome, Aug. 3 (LaPresse) – “Today’s Coreper meeting reviewed the events in Ceuta ahead of the extraordinary meeting of EU Interior Ministers on Aug. 4, which will be dedicated to the implications for internal security, the Schengen area and EU migration policy, as well as the examination of possible European measures to support Member States of first entry in the event of new migration emergencies.” This was stated by government sources. “During the discussion,” the sources continued, “Italy reiterated the main points of the letter signed last Friday by 22 Heads of State and Government of the European Union, reaffirming the need for a European approach to tackling irregular migration flows. Italy stressed that the protection of the external borders and the strengthening of the external dimension of migration policy must constitute the pillars of the Union’s action, also considering that the proper functioning of the Schengen area depends on the integrity of the external borders. The need to strengthen measures against irregular immigration was also reiterated by eliminating pull factors and enhancing the Union’s deterrence capacity. In this context, Italy underlined the urgency of intensifying cooperation with third countries and making returns more effective, including by rapidly launching pilot projects for the establishment of return hubs in third countries. Finally, the importance of promptly implementing the Chisinau Declaration was reaffirmed, in order to adapt the international legal framework to the challenges posed by modern irregular migration.”
