Rome, Aug. 2 (LaPresse) – “The profound mark left by the August 2, 1980 massacre at Bologna railway station is engraved in the history of the Republic and in the conscience of Italians.” President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella said this on the anniversary of the Bologna station massacre. “The endless pain for so many innocent victims, women, men and children; the emotion for the suffering and hardship endured by their families; the dismay over the destruction brought to the heart of the city’s and the entire nation’s civic life are renewed today, as on every anniversary. It is an awareness that concerns our community, above all young people. And it renews the commitment to safeguard the future that must be built on the values of freedom, justice and democracy. The values that the neo-fascist strategy of terror sought to destroy,” the Head of State continued. “That commitment, that solidarity which Bologna and all of Italy were able to offer in order to prevent the murderers and their accomplices from achieving their aim of subverting constitutional principles, striking at social cohesion and social achievements. The Italian people defeated them in the arduous search for truth,” Mattarella added. “The Republic is grateful to the judges and institutional representatives who, through their work, proved stronger than attempts at cover-ups, and to the victims’ families for their passionate commitment to the truth. Delivering justice is a victory for democracy,” Mattarella concluded.
