Milan, 15 July (LaPresse) – “Yesterday, the majority lost a vote; the government was brought down by its own MPs, because they were clearly punishing the arrogance with which Giorgia Meloni was trying to impose an electoral law that was riddled with problems.” So said the secretary of the PD, Elly Schlein, speaking on RTL 102.5. “We declared it inadmissible from the outset because, amongst other things, it includes an excessive bonus that would allow a party to secure, almost on its own, the votes needed, for example, to elect the President of the Republic – in short, a foretaste of the ‘premierato’ system. When they lost the constitutional referendum, they decided to shelve that other constitutional reform because they do not want to face another referendum and are trying to establish the ‘premierato’ through legislation,” argued Schlein. The Democratic Party leader then denounced what she called “yet another act of arrogance”: “I must say that another act of arrogance was also punished yesterday – that of a female Prime Minister who entered into a power pact and, in order to defend her own power, was prepared to sacrifice other women. Because this bogus amendment on preferences provided for ‘locked’ list leaders – meaning that the vast majority of MPs would still have been appointed by the party secretariat – it is an amendment that completely undermined gender parity, even among list leaders, and could therefore potentially have led to the election of all male list leaders, something we immediately denounced yesterday in the Chamber,” she stated.
Electoral law, Schlein: “Government defeated in a vote of no confidence by majority MPs; Meloni’s arrogance has been punished”
