Milan, 14 July (LaPresse) – “With all the urgent issues facing the country, this government has brought parliamentary proceedings to a standstill in order to change the electoral rules. Under the pretext of stability, Meloni is aiming directly for political immovability: this is her priority; she is not concerned about underpaid young people and women, the elderly who are foregoing medical treatment, or businesses that cannot bear the burden of taxes and high utility bills.” Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement, made these remarks in an interview with *La Repubblica*, speaking about the electoral law. “We have tabled a draft electoral law providing for a purely proportional system, a 3 per cent threshold and preferential votes,” he said. “But we have also worked with the other opposition parties to wage a united battle to put a firm stop to this law.” Should the ‘Melonellum’ not be blocked, “we are considering the lesser of two evils, damage limitation: for this reason, most recently, as the M5S we have tabled an amendment to introduce preferential votes, whilst also repealing the provision for the Prime Minister’s nomination and bringing the majority bonus back to an acceptable level. All this is to give citizens – who have been completely sidelined – a role in the formation of the new Parliament. These are the most serious grounds for unconstitutionality.”
