Milan, 7 June (LaPresse) – ‘Enough of investigations that drag on for decades. The left has been ridiculous over the Minetti case. To get at me, they have insulted Mattarella.’ So said Justice Minister Carlo Nordio in an interview with “Il Giornale”. “When an investigation drags on for decades, it is not only absurd, it is incompatible with the rule of law. Here, it happens because of the combination of principles which, taken individually, would be sacrosanct, but when put together become catastrophic,‘ says Nordio, explaining that this refers to ’the mandatory nature of criminal prosecution, the lack of any oversight over public prosecutors, and the inability of the High Council of the Judiciary to regulate this process. So it can happen that a prosecutor, once an investigation has been closed, holds onto a small part of it and starts all over again. And what is known as the ‘cloning of the case file’—which is what Berlusconi fell victim to, even after his death.” On the Minetti case, the minister says that “the attack on the President was cowardly and deplorable. But the most serious thing is that a large part of the opposition fell into this trap. Even a child would have realised that the target of that newspaper was Mattarella, whilst the PD and 5-Star believed it was myself and therefore the government. So they went on a rampage with hysterical arrogance, demanding my resignation. Rereading their tirades now, they will realise they have made complete fools of themselves. And I was astonished that someone as serious as Elly Schlein allowed her MPs to be so naive.”
