Rome, 19 March (LaPresse) – “The festival of Eid al-Fitr gives me the opportunity to extend my best wishes and hopes to our fellow citizens, to all women and men of the Islamic faith who are celebrating the end of Ramadan in Italy. The Republic, which among the distinctive features of its Constitution guarantees religious pluralism and freedom of belief – principles underpinning civic coexistence – strongly rejects all forms of intolerance, extremism and discrimination, promoting dialogue and mutual respect in the pursuit of peace.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a statement. “It is painful to observe that such a joyful occasion, celebrating life and reconciliation, must once again pass whilst so many peoples suffer the tragic consequences of old and new conflicts, particularly in the Middle East. I extend my best wishes to the innocent civilians suffering the consequences of the current crises, and to the religious communities preparing to celebrate this solemn festival, in the hope that they will heed its paramount call for brotherhood and harmony,” added the Head of State.
