Rome, 27 February (LaPresse) – ‘After the rift over justice, with a constitutional reform designed to undermine the independence of the judiciary and sabotage the balance of powers, we are now turning our attention to electoral law. Meloni does not feel secure and is changing the rules of the game with another power play, presenting an electoral law that resembles the “fraudulent law”. All the more reason to vote “No” in the referendum and block the assault on our institutions.’ This was stated by the president of the Democratic Party, Stefano Bonaccini, in an interview with Corriere della Sera. “How can they have the nerve to tamper with the electoral law when, in less than a month, the constitutional structure of the judiciary will be decided? Every day, more and more citizens and families are struggling to make ends meet, the country is struggling with economic stagnation and public and private investment at a standstill, and what is the response? A clash over the rules?‘ asks the Democratic Party MEP, adding: ’I think Meloni and the right, like Trump in the United States and Orbán in Hungary, cannot stand the constraints and countervailing powers that are at the heart of democracy.” On the possibility that the prime minister may call early elections, Bonaccini replies: ‘I don’t know what she has in mind, certainly not the good of the country. But I would point out one thing: all those who changed the electoral law before Meloni for political and personal gain then lost. When Italians realise that you are dealing with your own problems and not theirs, they will make you pay at the first opportunity.’ Finally, he emphasises that “it is no coincidence that they have ruled out introducing preferences: for the right, citizens should not choose anything, not even their representatives in Parliament. They only want appointees, and that is unacceptable”.
