Iran: Schlein calls on EU and international community to express solidarity and isolate regime

Rome, 11 January (LaPresse) – “We have always stood alongside the democratic movements that have been demonstrating for days in Iran and abroad, alongside the many women and young people who are showing courage, determination and a desire for freedom, and we continue to do so today more than ever. We view these events with deep solidarity and admiration for the courage of the demonstrators who are challenging the harsh repression of the Iranian regime. There is great concern about the arrests, attacks on protesters, and numerous killings already reported, and we condemn the blocking of the Internet to prevent the world from seeing its crimes, an unprecedented measure that shows the deep crisis of the regime. It is time for Europe and the international community to express their solidarity in concrete terms through the highest possible level of diplomatic action and dialogue with neighbouring countries to cut off any form of support for the regime, which is guilty of serious human rights violations for which it must be held accountable. We strongly support the protests of the Iranian people and their strong aspiration for freedom’. So said PD secretary Elly Schlein.
