Rome, 24 November (LaPresse) – Francesco Saverio Garofani ‘is the secretary of the Supreme Defence Council, he is responsible for national defence, I think it would be better if at least that role were left to someone else’. So said Senate President Ignazio La Russa in his speech to Direzione Nord. ‘It was quite clear that Meloni had nothing to do with it. We are talking about a councillor who, in a fan environment, let himself go and made a series of imprudent comments about the government and Meloni,’ he added. “If a councillor of the President of the Republic says this, you cannot attribute this thought to the president, but criticism of this councillor is absolutely legitimate, especially if he was asked to deny it and he said ‘it was just friends chatting”. “If he had been a right-winger, we would see him hanging from the lampposts of some city or crucified in a Catholic manner,” added the President of the Senate, “but he is a left-winger, so never mind, the fault lies with those who raise the issue, not with those who, perhaps unconsciously, express not the thoughts of the President of the Republic, but their personal desires, which are not worthy of someone who is an adviser to the president”. ‘I express my full solidarity with the President of the Republic, who has found himself caught up in this affair for which he bears no responsibility and who, I am sure, does not agree with the things said by his political adviser,’ he concluded.
La Russa on Garofani: ‘I think it would be best for him to step down from his position.’
