Irpinia earthquake, Mattarella: “It’s a spur to research suitable anti-seismic solutions”

Milan, November 23 (LaPresse) – “Forty-five years have passed since that dramatic November 23, 1980, when violent earthquakes struck Irpinia, Basilicata, and parts of Puglia, causing the deaths of approximately three thousand people, thousands injured and displaced, and millions of citizens in need of assistance.” This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the 45th anniversary of the earthquake of November 23, 1980. “The response to the catastrophe by institutions and civil society, by the many volunteers who, moved by a profound spirit of participation and solidarity, rushed to the aid of the local populations, was demanding and generous,” added Mattarella, for whom it is “a difficult chapter in our history that has remained etched in the collective memory, a constant reminder of the need to adapt monitoring systems and immediate response to the vulnerabilities to which parts of the Italian territory are exposed, and at the same time a spur to the search for adequate anti-seismic solutions for a reconstruction that would also revitalize inland areas of our country.” La Repubblica “commemorates its victims and joins in the grief of their families,” Mattarella concluded.
