Sri Lanka People’s Front (Slpp) leader Dinesh Gunawardena has been sworn in as prime minister. Gunawardena had been appointed home minister by former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa last April.

The post of prime minister had been vacant since Wednesday, July 20, when the previous head of government, Ranil Wickremesinghe, was elected president. The 73-year-old Gunawardena, a longtime ally of the Rajapaksa family, has previously held various ministerial and administrative positions at the provincial and local levels.

The new prime minister’s inauguration follows by a few hours a raid by Sinhalese security forces, which dismantled part of the garrisons of anti-government protesters in Colombo.
