Rome, 23 Oct. (LaPresse) – News of the Oleshky ceasefire, which is due to come into effect next Tuesday, comes a week after the appeal made by Pope Leo XIV. Last Friday, from the Gemelli Hospital, where he was recovering after undergoing surgery to remove a tumour from his right lung, the Pontiff had a telephone conversation with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, focusing specifically on the humanitarian situation in the town in the Kherson region and the urgent need for a truce to allow the delivery of food and medical aid and the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population. On Monday, the Pope had spoken to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: in that conversation too, the focus had been on the situation in Oleshky and the need to establish a humanitarian truce.
