Bolzano, Sept. 5 (LaPresse) – “On this Autonomy Day, on the 80th anniversary of the Paris Agreement between Italy and Austria that laid the foundations for the autonomy of Trentino-Alto Adige, we honor the history of this land, which is past, present and future precisely in the name of special autonomy. The very fact that, eighty years on, we continue to celebrate not only autonomy but also its renewal is the clearest evidence that it is itself a living and dynamic reality, capable of developing and evolving over time. And this year there is an additional entry in the great book of history, impressed in indelible ink for the benefit of the Autonomous Provinces and their citizens: the reform of the Statute. An exceptional result, awaited for decades and achieved after a long process based on dialogue and loyal cooperation between the central government and local administrations. A great effort that saw final approval without a single opposing vote and which is the result of the shared will of all the actors involved: I made a commitment and kept my word, personally working on the drafting of the text with Presidents Fugatti and Kompatscher, and with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who ensured respect for the political agreement. If today we can say that we have achieved a historic result, it is because everyone played their part and worked with sincere unity of purpose. A step forward in the great history of Trentino and South Tyrol autonomy, to which I am proud to have contributed also for personal reasons, by virtue of my grandmother’s origins in Val Passiria and my grandfather, who founded the MAB to achieve autonomy for Bergamo. The challenge for the future will be to make the best possible use of this renewed autonomy and the many opportunities it offers, in order to write another 80 years and more of history in the name of identities and efficiency, in the interests of the citizens of Trentino and South Tyrol.
