Rome, Sept. 1 (LaPresse) – The perpetrators of the attack against journalist Sigfrido Ranucci will seek, should they stand trial, to be tried under an expedited procedure. The intention was communicated by their lawyers to investigators at Piazzale Clodio, after having already been reported to reporters as they left Rebibbia prison following last week’s interrogations. The request can only be formally submitted after the investigation is concluded and the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office potentially requests that the suspects be committed for trial. In the event of a conviction, the alleged perpetrators face a prison sentence of between eight and ten years. By opting for the expedited procedure, however, they could benefit from a one-third reduction in the sentence provided for by law. For the time being, the prosecution’s case remains as outlined by the prosecutors and already deemed solid both by the Review Court and by the judge for preliminary investigations in the precautionary measures. Investigations into Gomes Tavares, considered by investigators to be Valter Lavitola’s factotum and still untraceable, are continuing. Investigators are also closely examining his financial dealings with Lavitola. Forensic digital analyses of the mobile phones and computers seized from the four suspects and Lavitola himself could prove decisive.
