Rome, 13 Aug. (LaPresse) – From 1 to 31 July 2026, the NAS Carabinieri – in collaboration with the Ministry of Health – carried out inspections across Italy to ensure the correct bottling and serving of treated water in bars and restaurants. In total, 272 inspections were carried out and 53 samples were taken for laboratory analysis. The checks revealed 147 cases of non-compliance, accounting for 54 per cent of the inspections, with 126 individuals reported to the relevant administrative and health authorities. The investigations – it is explained – revealed a total of 256 breaches. One criminal offence was charged in relation to the sale of food bearing false labelling, and 255 administrative penalties were imposed for irregularities in the labelling for the sale and serving of non-pre-packaged products, as well as for hygiene, structural, procedural and authorisation shortcomings, amounting to a total of approximately 175,000 euros. Two thousand litres of unfiltered drinking water and seven items of non-compliant equipment were seized; and the suspension of operations was ordered for ten businesses due to hygiene, structural and licensing deficiencies, with an estimated commercial value of around 4.7 million euros.
