Naples, Aug. 1 (LaPresse) – “The earthquake swarm, as volcanologists tell us, is still ongoing. Further events with a magnitude above 3 could therefore occur. In these conditions, caution and self-control are needed from everyone.” This was stated by Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies Nello Musumeci. “At present – the minister explained – 8 buildings and 5 commercial activities have been declared uninhabitable, with 130 families evacuated, amounting to around 290 people; many of them have found accommodation in the facilities set up by the municipalities of Naples and Pozzuoli. Five people have been hospitalised due to trauma and fractures. Railway services have resumed normally, with the exception of the Cumana line on the Bagnoli-Torregaveta section. It could be restored in the morning tomorrow. Electricity services have been restored. The Pozzuoli Port Authority has closed the port and maritime traffic has been diverted to Naples. The port authority has prohibited access to the maritime state-owned areas beneath the collapsed rocky cliffs and to the stretches of sea along the coastline between Portici and Bagnoli. Anti-looting services by police forces were immediately arranged. The preparation of two further reception areas is underway by the government’s extraordinary commissioner Fulvio Soccodato,” Musumeci stressed. “The government is close to the communities affected and for three years has been engaged in implementing the ‘Campi Flegrei Programme’. A programme that includes preventive measures in both public and private sectors, for more than half a billion euros, which may require additional resources. I hope that a sense of responsibility prevails among everyone at this difficult time,” added Musumeci, who thanked “all operators, mayors, who are working to minimise disruption, and in particular the prefect of Naples, with whom I have been in constant contact since yesterday, for the coordination provided.”
