Rome, 24 July (LaPresse) – “We are astonished by the Review Court’s decision: we expected that at least the charge relating to the ‘mafia-style method’ would be dropped”. With these words, lawyers Generoso Pagliarulo and Antonio Falconieri, defence counsel for the four alleged perpetrators of the attack on journalist and *Report* presenter Sigfrido Ranucci, commented on the order by which the Review Court confirmed the pre-trial detention and the charge of using ‘mafia-style methods’ against their clients. The decision relates to the investigation into the ambush that took place in Pomezia on 16 October 2025. Pellegrino D’Avino, Antonio Passariello, Saverio Mutone and Marika De Filippis remain in prison, whilst Valter Lavitola is currently only under investigation and is not subject to any pre-trial detention measures. The two criminal defence lawyers expressed their complete bewilderment at the panel’s ruling: “We were taken aback by the news; we are therefore astonished. It seemed to be a ground that could actually hold up, particularly with regard to what might be described as a natural diminishing of the need for precautionary measures – which, in any case, did not occur. Evidently, the application of Article 416-bis (paragraph 1 – ed.) has, in a sense, overshadowed everything else, and so here is the confirmation. We are, of course, awaiting the grounds for the relevant decisions.”
