This has been reported by his defence lawyers, Pablo De Luca and Riccardo Di Lorenzo, who speak of a further curtailment of their client’s rights; he has been in custody for weeks as part of the investigation in which he is a suspect. In a statement, the lawyers explain that they had submitted a request for Adinolfi to be heard during the hearing scheduled for Monday, but that the request was reportedly rejected. According to the defence, this decision forms part of what they describe as a ‘persecutory’ campaign against the leader of the Popolo della Famiglia party. The lawyers also refer to the recent ruling by the Turin Civil Court, which found Adinolfi guilty of certain statements regarding Islamism, and contest the disclosure of investigation documents to the media before they had been made available in full to the defence. In their account, Adinolfi is said to be subject to a precautionary measure even though, in their view, there are no grounds sufficient to justify it, arguing that there is no risk of him reoffending, tampering with evidence or absconding. The defence lawyers have announced that, during the hearing, they will request, as a secondary measure, at least a relaxation of the order, allowing Adinolfi to attend Mass weekly – a possibility which, they claim, is currently denied to him and the absence of which is causing him distress.
