Milan, 15 July (LaPresse) – A large-scale operation by the State Police in the Barriera Milano district of Turin. From yesterday afternoon until late in the evening, numerous State Police patrols cordoned off the areas around Parco Sempione, the Sempione swimming pools, the former railway depot and neighbouring streets in Turin’s Barriera Milano district. With all access routes closed off, officers carried out thorough checks and identified those present in the area, the majority of whom were of non-EU origin. Over 200 people were identified, and 11 were arrested (7 for drug offences, including one for having swallowed drug-filled capsules; 2 in accordance with a pre-trial detention order as they were strongly suspected of robbing an elderly woman; 1 in accordance with a committal order, and 1 detained on suspicion of aggravated robbery committed against an elderly man). The following were seized: 130 g of crack, 100 g of cocaine, 200 g of ketamine, 10 g of heroin, 21 g of hashish, 4 g of MDMA, 4 g of amphetamine and 21,000 Rivotril tablets (found in an area adjacent to the park and seized from persons unknown). Forty orders were issued requiring individuals to leave the high-surveillance zone of Parco Sempione, and 14 orders prohibiting access to urban areas; two undocumented foreign nationals were served with expulsion orders, and 12 people were reported to the authorities on various grounds (for breaches of the Authority’s orders, breaches of immigration law and trespassing on land and in buildings). Officers cleared the entire area and ensured it remained safe and liveable, thanks in part to the invaluable support of the Crime Prevention Unit, the Turin Mobile Unit and staff from the Railway Police, the latter having carried out a targeted increase in surveillance at Turin Rebaudengo–Fossata railway station, where over 60 people were identified.
