Rome, 14 July (LaPresse) – “ We have learnt to recognise the regime’s manoeuvres. And so, given the timing – and the fact that the police then went to her home – we suspect they are trying in some way to manipulate Italy by putting pressure on this woman, in short, by threatening her. We have learnt to recognise them. They perhaps haven’t learnt; indeed, the Egyptian regime certainly hasn’t learnt to understand how a democracy works. In our country, there is a separation of powers. None of their manoeuvres can in any way undermine that.” These are the words of the Regeni family’s lawyer, Alessandra Ballerini, on the occasion of the latest hearing before the First Court of Assizes in Rome concerning the abduction, torture and murder of Giulio Regeni. “It has been a never-ending journey. Full of obstacles, an uphill struggle, quicksand – everything I can think of. In short, we are resilient and so we will reach a verdict shortly,” concluded Ballerini, confirming the determination with which the Regeni family has faced a trial marked by constant obstacles and a long search for the truth.
