So said Pope Leo XIV whilst receiving members of the European Parliament’s intergroup on demographics in audience. “The problems arising from zero population growth are many and complex, and include, not least, the pandemic of loneliness. Furthermore, demographic data are not merely statistics, but speak of fatherhood, motherhood and children,‘ added the Pontiff. ’And children are the future. However, speaking of the future implies integral and sustainable development, which is seriously hindered without solidarity between the generations. Unfortunately, such solidarity requires an intergenerational balance that is currently lacking in Europe.”
