Naples: two women run over and killed; 34-year-old man arrested for drink-driving

Rome, 23 March (LaPresse) – The 34-year-old man who ran over and killed two women at Porta Nolana (Naples) last night has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. According to reports, he was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. The accident occurred at around 7.15 pm on Corso Garibaldi, near Porta Nolana. According to the local police’s reconstruction of events, the victims, two Ukrainian women, were crossing the road towards Via San Cosmo Fuori Porta Nolana when they were struck by a car driven by the man. Following the violent impact, the driver lost control of the vehicle, crashing into three parked cars. One of the two women died instantly, whilst the other was taken in a critical condition to Ospedale del Mare, where she died approximately two hours after admission. The 34-year-old, who was driving a hire car, underwent breathalyser tests, which proved positive. On the orders of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Naples, he was arrested and placed under house arrest. The officers also proceeded to revoke his driving licence and impound the vehicle. Investigations are ongoing by the local police, who are gathering witness statements and retrieving CCTV footage to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident.
