Crans-Montana, Bertolaso: “Seven youths in intensive care and five at the Burn Center”

Milan, Jan. 12 (LaPresse) – “There are seven youths in intensive care on ventilators and five at the Burn Center. We hope that a couple of them can be extubated in the coming days. For three or four of them, the course will be much longer and more complicated.” This was stated by Lombardy Region Welfare Councillor Guido Bertolaso during a press briefing outside Niguarda Hospital. “All prognoses are guarded. The intubated youths are sedated and are not able to respond to any stimuli. They are in very serious condition. One of them is also undergoing dialysis after developing a very serious infectious disease. Another youth has asthma problems and, like all the others, additional pulmonary issues,” the councillor added. “The most complicated issue today is not so much the severe and extensive burns, which everyone has, but rather the lung conditions, because all these youths had to breathe highly toxic substances which unfortunately are now taking over at the pulmonary level. This is creating a whole series of problems, especially of an infectious nature, that are extremely difficult to deal with,” Bertolaso explained. “As I have said in recent days, it is as if we were treating our own children: we are doing so with the utmost commitment and with all the technologies that science currently makes available to us, but above all with the passion and expertise that all the medical and nursing staff have shown,” he concluded.
