Milan, 22 July (LaPresse) – Laura Santi, a 50-year-old woman from Perugia, died at her home in Perugia yesterday, 21 July, after self-administering a lethal dose of medication. Her husband Stefano, who had always been by her side, even during the last years of her battle with end-of-life issues, was at her side. After years of progression of the disease and after the last year of a fierce deterioration in her condition, her suffering had become intolerable for her. The news was announced in a statement by the Coscioni Association. Suffering from a progressive and advanced form of multiple sclerosis, the journalist had been given the green light by her local health authority last month, two and a half years after her request for access to assisted suicide and a long legal battle. The drug and the necessary equipment were provided by the health authority, while the medical and nursing staff who assisted her in the procedure were volunteers.
