Attorney General Merrick Garland announces a lawsuit to block the enforcement of a new Texas law that bans most abortions.

The law bans abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy and as soon as cardiac activity is detectable. Six weeks is well before many women even know they are pregnant. Anyone who successfully sues an abortion provider under this law could be awarded at least $10,000. The law allows private citizens to sue abortion providers and anyone else who helps a woman obtain an abortion, including those who give a woman a ride to a clinic or provide financial assistance to obtain an abortion.
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit in Texas asking a federal judge to declare that the law is invalid since it goes against the constitutional rights of women. The Texas law, known also as SB8, is the nation’s biggest curb to abortion since the Supreme Court affirmed in the landmark 1973 that women have the right to an abortion.
