The lawyers: "Historical plea also for the impact on police reforms"
The family of George Floyd, the African American killed by police on May 25, will receive $ 27 million from the city of Minneapolis following the civil lawsuit filed after the 46-year-old’s death. The Minneapolis City Council emerged from the closed session to announce the record deal, which includes $ 500,000 for the neighbourhood where Floyd was arrested. The Floyd family’s attorney, Ben Crump, has called a press conference at one (local time) for family members to attend.
“The agreement is historic not only for the figure, but also for its impact on police and social justice reforms,” the lawyers said. Floyd died after a policeman, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee to his neck for nine minutes until he died of asphyxiation during an arrest in May 2020.
