President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris with their families arrive at the steps of the U.S. Capitol for the start of the official inauguration ceremonies
Joe and Jill Biden arrived on Capitol Hill for the inauguration, along with his deputy Kamala Harris. Alongside the president-elect is his wife, Jill, while accompanying Kamala Harris is her husband, Douglas Emhoff. American Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota welcomed them. The procession of the president-elect made its way through a mostly deserted Washington after a mass in the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. The streets, which would normally have been lined with thousands of onlookers, were instead surrounded by a massive presence of security forces to include military vehicles and armed troops. Some 25,000 members of the National Guard were sent to Washington following the assault on the United States Capitol two weeks ago. Biden stopped to say hello from the Capitol steps before entering the building.
