New planes will use up to 25 percent less fuel than existing models.
ITA Airways, the new Italian flag carrier that has replaced the defunct Alitalia, said Wednesday that it has confirmed an order for 28 new aircraft from European plane maker Airbus, including seven A220s, 11 A320neos and 10 A330neos, the latest version of the popular A330 widebody aircraft. The order confirms a Memorandum of Understanding announced on September 30. ITA said it expects to sign leases for Airbus’ A350 aircraft to complete the modernization of its fleet.
These new Airbus aircraft will expand ITA Airways’ initial fleet with state-of-the-art aircraft offering improved environmental performance, and equipped with the most advanced technologies and cabin interiors to ensure maximum operational efficiency for the carrier and the highest level of comfort for travelers.
The Airbus A330-900, A220-100 and A320neo aircraft of the ITA fleet
The A220 is the only aircraft built specifically for the 100-150 seat market and brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and the latest generation of Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines. With a range of up to 3,450 nm ( 6,390 km ), the A220 offers carriers greater operational flexibility. The A220 offers up to 25% less fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per seat than previous generation aircraft, and 50% less NOx emissions than industry standards. Additionally, the aircraft’s acoustic footprint is reduced by 50% compared to the previous generation – making the A220 a good neighbor around airports.
The A320neo Family is the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. The A320neo offers operators a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The A320neo Family incorporates the latest technologies, including next generation engines and Sharklet wing devices. The Airbus A320neo Family offers unrivaled comfort in all classes and Airbus seats 18 inches wide as standard in economy.
The Airbus A330neo is a true next-generation aircraft, based on features popular for the A330 Family and developed for the latest technology, the A350. Featuring an immersive Airspace cabin, the A330neo offers a unique passenger experience with state-of- the-art in-flight entertainment systems and connectivity. Powered by the latest Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and featuring a new wing with wider span and A350- inspired winglets, the A330neo also offers an unprecedented level of efficiency, with 25% lower per-seat fuel consumption compared to competitors of the previous generation. Thanks to its bespoke midsize capacity and excellent range versatility, the A330neo is considered the ideal aircraft to support operators in their post-COVID-19 recovery.
Alfredo Altavilla, Executive President of ITA Airways, said: “Today the strategic partnership with Airbus takes an important step forward, and we are pleased to have ratified the pact we made last September. In addition to this agreement, further and new possibilities for collaboration have emerged, in particular with regard to technological developments in the aviation sector and digitalization, where Airbus is the market leader. All this is part of the actions aimed at achieving our environmental sustainability objectives.”
“We are very proud to partner with ITA Airways, building the carrier’s long-term future with the most efficient and latest technology Airbus aircraft, supporting its business goal of developing its network in Europe and internationally in the most sustainable way,” said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International.
