(LaPresse) – Athens’ suburbs are in the grip of fire: houses and vegetation just outside the Greek capital are on fire, with firefighters and residents continuing to struggle to tame the flames. Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes as the blaze intensified fueled by strong gusts of wind.

Huge clouds of smoke are visible from downtown Athens. At least two people were hospitalized with respiratory problems and minor burns. More than 1,300 square kilometers of land in Greece were damaged by wildfires last year, the worst figure recorded since 2007.
