Car swept off road by flash floods

(LaPresse) A 72-year-old woman was rescued by New South Wales police after her vehicle was swept off a flooded road 15 kilometers north of Kempsey. The woman had been trapped inside her car in chest-deep water after she was washed downstream during flooding that hit the area. Officers from the Northeast Coast Police District attached a winch cable to a sergeant, who entered the floodwaters and headed toward the semi-submerged vehicle. The officer found the woman trapped inside, now up to her neck in water. Working with five other officers, he was able to bring her safely ashore. Police then took the woman to a local hospital where she was treated for hypothermia and exhaustion. She is believed to have been trapped for 45 minutes. None of the officers were injured.
