Plans and prayers as country faces worst drought in decades

As drought presses on Italy, former Prime Minister Enrico Letta said the government must proclaim a state of emergency as soon as possible. Minister for the South and Territorial Cohesion, Maria Rosaria Cafargna is proposing a “water plan.” Red alerts for heat waves are expected in Turin, Bolzano and Bologna, and on Thursday the cities on alert rise to five: Ancona, Bologna, Bolzano, Florence and Perugia. Water rationing has already arrived in various regions, first of all Piedmont. The Archbishop of Milan on June 25 will pray for rain.
