Climate, EU Presidency: ‘There is still work to be done on the 2040 target’

Brussels, Sept. 18 (LaPresse) – On the 2040 climate target, “we have the Commission’s proposal, we have made progress, and we have a report showing that the goal is achievable if Member States are willing. I believe it sends a strong signal that Europe wants to meet its obligations,” said Danish Climate Minister Lars Aagaard, representing the EU’s rotating presidency, upon his arrival at the Environment Council.

“I think we are in a 100-meter sprint, we’ve reached the 80-meter mark, we see the finish line, we see the possibility of crossing it together as a group — but we’re not there yet. We’re in a good position, but there’s still work to be done,” he added.

The minister also stressed that “there must be a willingness to find a compromise,” and therefore, “it is in the hands of the Member States.”
