Milan, 13 September (LaPresse) – ‘OBEY: Power to the Peaceful’, the exhibition dedicated to Shepard Fairey – one of the most influential figures on the contemporary urban art scene – has come to a close at the Gallerie d’Italia – Naples, Intesa Sanpaolo’s museum. The exhibition was organised under the patronage of Naples City Council and in collaboration with Wunderkammern Gallery, and curated by Giuseppe Pizzuto. Since 6 May, over 150,000 visitors have passed through the doors of the Gallerie d’Italia – Naples during the exhibition’s run: a figure that reflects the significant interest generated by the project and by the artistic language of an artist capable of placing the themes of peace, social justice and collective responsibility at the heart of the dialogue with the public. This figure represents not only the success of the exhibition, but also a significant achievement for the Gallerie d’Italia – Naples and their ability to attract new audiences to discover the museum, its collections and its cultural programme. The exhibition itinerary allowed visitors to combine the temporary exhibition with the permanent collections of the Gallerie d’Italia – Naples, which include Intesa Sanpaolo’s historical and artistic heritage and the displays dedicated to Neapolitan painting, Attic and Magna Graecian ceramics, and 20th-century and contemporary art, featuring the ‘Vitalità del Tempo’ exhibition route. The exhibition ‘OBEY: Power to the Peaceful’ brought together over 150 works, including iconic pieces, unique and limited-edition works, rare archive pieces and 15 previously unseen works, forming a journey through four major thematic areas: People Power, Propaganda, War and Peace, and Social Justice. This extensive selection offered a journey through Fairey’s artistic exploration and his distinctive visual language, which emerged from skate culture and underground graphics and evolved through a reworking of the codes of propaganda and mass communication.
