Milan, 24 Aug. (LaPresse) – The average price of diesel on the motorway has exceeded the Italian all-time high set in 2022. This was stated by Codacons following data released today by the Mimit. With an average price of 2.204 euros per litre on motorways, diesel has surpassed the record set in the week of 14 March 2022, when a litre of diesel cost an average of 2.154 euros per litre in Italy – the association notes. As for petrol, however, the 2-euro-per-litre threshold has been exceeded in Italy on only eight occasions: specifically in March, June and July 2022, and then in September 2023.” And the bad news for Italian motorists is not over yet – warns Codacons – from 27 August onwards, and barring any new government intervention, diesel prices on the ordinary road network will soar to an average of over 2.3 per litre, whilst on motorways the average price will rise to 2.37 euros per litre, given current fuel prices”. “The mini-extension of the excise duty discount decided yesterday by the government will do nothing to solve the problem of fuel prices and comes across as a mockery of Italians,” Codacons argues – “The excise duty cut must not only be extended but must also be applied to petrol, given the new record prices reached at the pump, whilst the discount on diesel must be increased because it is clear that today’s 17 cents is no longer sufficient to cover the cost of refuelling.”
