US has exceeded 25 million confirmed cases of Covid-19
In the Americas, the US has exceeded 25 million confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University: it is the highest figure in the world. In the country, there are about one in four reported cases worldwide, one in five deaths, while the number of new cases has slowed down to an average of 176,000 per day in the last week, from 244,000 at the beginning of January. “California is slowly starting to emerge from the most dangerous surge of this pandemic yet, which is the light at the end of the tunnel we’ve been hoping for,” said California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly.
Further south, the situation remains dramatic in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, where hospitals in Manaus are under extreme pressure due to the increase in infections, attributed to a more contagious variant. Over 580 people await admission to the hospital, over 100 an intensive care bed, while there is a serious shortage of oxygen supplies. Amazonas governor Wilson Lima announced tough new lockdown measures on Monday, banned from going out except for essential reasons.
