Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Laender ministers-presidents have reached an agreement to extend the lockdown to January 31st. Angela Merkel confirmed the extension of the block for three weeks, in fact while the number of daily infections is starting to dip in Germany, deaths from COVID-19 have risen in recent weeks to around 1,000 per day.
The leader also announced a squeeze on movements in the regions most affected by Covid-19 and a brake on social contacts, in line with the measures imposed last spring. To stem the infections, a tightening on private meetings is also envisaged with meetings allowed only with a non-cohabitant person or with family members, as happened in spring. There is also a limit to travel within a radius of 15 kilometers around the place of residence in the counties with an incidence in 7 days of over 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, unless there is a valid reason.
